No Restrictions To Be Imposed On New Drivers

About to take your test? Breathe a sigh of relief!

No limitations on new driving licencesNew drivers are not going to have any restrictions on their licences after
passing the driving test following a government decision to reject evidence that imposing limits for the first year would save lives

Calls from road safety groups and the Commons
Transport Select Committee for a lower alcohol limit for novice drivers, and a ban on them carrying young passengers late at night, have also been disregarded

Instead, the new consultation paper will propose that professional instruction for learner
drivers should be mandatory, and that they should prove that they have acquired key skills before taking the practical test

The recommendation of a minimum learning
period, which would raise the minimum driving age to 18, was rejected

Approximately 14 young drivers and their passengers are killed every week in the UK. Male drivers aged 17 to
20 are almost ten times more likely to be killed or seriously injured than men aged 40 to 59

The transport committee
recommended last July that, for the first year after passing their tests, new drivers should be prohibited from carrying any passengers aged 10 to 20 years between the hours of 11pm and 5am

It also recommended that the drink-drive limit for new drivers should be 20 mg's of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, and not 80mg as at present

A major road safety study in the US found that deaths among 16 and 17-year-olds fell by almost 42
per cent when limits were placed on the number of young passengers they could carry at night

Research for the Department for Transport found that

“there is evidence that night time restrictions can be effective at reducing night time accidents, though effectiveness will depend on the level of enforcement”

Under the Government’s proposals, learners will accumulate skills in modules that will include basic skills such as parallel parking, as well as using
high-speed roads and driving at night. The full details are still to be announced, but the changes look set to completely change the way learner drivers view the driving test

The changes are also likely to mean more expense for those wanting to learn to drive, and more training for driving instructors

This would be totally unfair

why should young drivers always get blamed for everything? I only passed a few months ago, but I'm always very careful when I go out in my mums car. I was only 17 and a half when I passed and these rules would have just been stupid

Jen

New drivers should have reduced speed limits

New drivers should be forced to stay below certain speeds for the first 12 months after passing their tests. They just don't have the experience to deal with hazards in the proper way

How can someone who's never even driven a car on their own be allowed to drive at 70mph on a motorway?

It's just crazy. It takes years to get the experience to stay safe on the roads. The insurance companies have got this right. They've recognised this for years because they've always charged more for people who are under 25 years old. It's amazing that the government can't see this the same way!

If the insurance companies see young people as a high risk, then why can't rules be imposed to prevent them from being in serious accidents?
